Napa Valley Grille - Yountville (Napa)

When looking for a place to have lunch in Napa, I tried to find a place that was low key, reasonably priced, and conveniently located. I also tend to give preferential consideration to restaurants that I've never been to and that provide an online reservation option - bonus points if it's through OpenTable.com. In addition, I will almost never consider eating somewhere that doesn't provide a sample menu on their website. If a restaurant doesn't have a website, I assume it doesn't truly exist.

With all that in mind, our only real choices for the southern Napa/Yountville area were Mustard's, Brix, and The Napa Valley Grille. Since we've been to Mustard's and Brix seemed neither low key nor reasonably priced, our minds were set on The Napa Valley Grille. After looking at their menu, our stomachs concurred. Seeing such items as Parsnip & Maple Soup, a 1/2 Pound "Kobe" Burger, and a Dungeness Crab Melt - their menu sounded intriguing and delicious. And since we were going to The French Laundry that evening, our wallets appreciated the slight reprieve.

When we arrived, the first thing that struck me was the location. Not the strategically placed tourist trap situated at a main intersection of Hwy29 & Madison St. location, but the actual physical structure. It is a beautiful stone building with simple but elegant lines and very esthetic dimensions. I'm a bit of a naive architect buff, so I can be easily awed at times, but I think dimension is an oft-overlooked aspect of design. The inside of the building was well done, but reminded me a bit of a Perkins.

We were the first table of the day, so we were well attended to by our genuinely nice, but overly enthusiastic server. We were presented with some addictively good bread with a dipping plate of olive oil & a generous amount of balsamic vinegar. I swear balsamic vinegar is my other blood type. [Note from the proof reader and wife: There was a lot of balsamic on the plate because I asked for it, if you look at the picture of the ' dipping plate ' the waitress wanted to do it in the reverse - tons of EVOO and barely any balsamic. However, I know my husband and I know his other blood type. ;) ]

To start with, we ordered the "Harvest Platter" because it's impossible to find an antipasto platter in Omaha, let alone one that matches the looks of this one. I'm glad we did, because it ended up being the favorite item we ordered. There's just something about the simplicity and freshness of a quality antipasto that makes it hard to top. The standouts of this platter would probably be the dried beef, the caper berry and oddly enough, the stone ground mustard which was relatively mild, yet flavorful and seemed to have a slightly fruity or flowery undertone.

I wish I could bestow the same praise on our main courses, but I wasn't as impressed with that portion of our meal. Nothing we had was necessarily bad (though the Eggs Monterey wasn't far off), but nothing we had was all that extraordinary. It's been a month now since we've eaten there and the only entree I can vividly recall is the Dungeness Crab Melt, which tasted of buttered toast and crab, which was served with some darn tasty fries that tasted just like Pik-Nik Original Shoestring Potatoes. Yes, the ones in the can. Yum.

The fact that I didn't find the food sublime, however, doesn't mean that I wouldn't recommend the place. Given the location, quality of the ingredients, and the creativity that goes into their dishes, I think the Napa Valley Grille is an almost perfect spot to stop for lunch. Is there better food to be had in the area? Most definitely, but after you've been to Bouchon , Tra Vigne and all of the other high end spots, try slumming it with the tourists at the Napa Valley Grille (as much as you can slum it in Yountville). I'd say my only hesitation towards returning would be due to the fact that I'd like to find and try some of the other less expensive eateries that do as good of a job as this place does on delivering good food for a good value.

F.O.O.D. Meeting - February 2006

The second meeting for Foodies of Omaha took place on Saturday, Feb 18th. Our theme for this month was "Authentic Ethnic Food". We were looking for places that could provide a true recreation of food found in the region the restaurant represents. Admit it, most of the Italian, Chinese and Mexican places your friends and co-workers eat at are not truly ethnic. As a matter of fact, if most people ran into "Authentic" ethnic food, they might never eat that region's cuisine again; at least in the midwest.

So with open minds and empty stomachs, we searched out the places that we knew could provide us food with some combination of organs, "interesting" textures and accents & umlauts. Of the places in Omaha that we identified as having this capability, we came up with the following list.

Ahmad's - Persian (Old Market)
Das Rheinland - German (Old Market)
El Alamo - Mexican (24th & O St.)
Espana - Spanish (60th & Maple)
Grand Fortune - Cantonese (172nd & Center)
Howard's - Mexican (13th & I St.)
Indian Oven - Indian (Old Market)
Katie's - Greek (40th St & Dodge St.)
Le Voltaire - French (156th & Dodge St.)
Mediterranean Bistro - ? (120th & Blondo)

After voting and juggling, Grand Fortune was decided upon as our venue.

Now before anyone starts flaming that this or that place isn't authentic, let me remind you, this was a list of places that we knew had the ability. Yes, Grand Fortune serves Crab Rangoon, which is about the least authentic Chinese food after Fortune Cookies, but if you know the secret password...

At Grand Fortune, the secret password (passphrase really) is "Can I see your other menu?". Do this and you'll be rewarded with a plain white laminated menu with authentic Cantonese style delectables such as steamed fish, scallion chicken, Singapore noodles and several other Chinatown standards. Now, I've never been to China, so I can't vouch for the authenticity, but I can say that all of their dishes match pretty well to what I've grown accustom when eating in Oakland's Chinatown. This might have something to do with the fact that the owner is from Oakland and the chef is from San Francisco. The best part is, if you have a favorite dish that's not on the menu, just ask for it. Chances are, if you can say it, they can make it. Oh, and they have DIM SUM!

So with our secret passphrase, we met with the owner, Tracy, and setup to have a 9 course Chinese style banquet consisting of the following items:

Seafood Tofu Soup
Honey Walnut Shrimp
Jellyfish
Chinese Sausage & Gai-lan
Bok Choy with Black Mushroom
Scallion Chicken (half)
Cantonese Style Duck (half)
Spareribs in Imperial Sauce
Sweet Taro & Tapioca Soup

Unfortunately, several of our members were unable to attend, so we had to pare down our menu a bit. The items we did not have were: Chinese Sausage, Scallion Chicken and the Spareribs. Of the items we did have, everything was fantastic. I'm not originally from Oakland and I only lived there for a couple of years, but it felt like being home.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures for you and I'm not going to describe each of the dishes we had because most of them taste exactly like they sound. I will say that the duck we had was better than most I've had in the past and this is the first time I've ever finished a Chinese dessert (though I did donate the taro to my wife).

Speaking of dessert, we might have a tradition starting at our F.O.O.D. meetings. After we finished at Grand Fortune, we made a quick stop down the road to Gelato Jo's. I can't really say if their gelato is better than Whole Foods, but it's definitely in the top 2 of Omaha.

So if you've always wanted to try some "authentic" Chinese food, stop in to Grand Fortune, say "Hi" to Tracy, tell her Foodies of Omaha sent you and muster up your tongue to spit out the words "Gon Chow Ngau Ho" and enjoy your Beef Chow Fun!

The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus - San Francisco

An afternoon at the Rotunda, otherwise known as dining with ladies who lunch. This review is going to be short as there's really not much to talk about. How about a 30-second review, you say?

Well, the highlights of our lunch would probably be the famed Neiman Marcus Popovers with Strawberry Butter, the Chicken Broth amuse and the Striped Bass. The lowlights were pretty much anything that had lobster in it.

Long review short, if you don't live in San Francisco and you want a nice view of Union Square, stop by for dessert, demand a table by the window and camp for an hour. If you're actually hungry or are looking for some great food, try Scala's Bistro or one of the many other places in the immediate vicinity. If you just really want to try the popovers, the recipe is in their cookbook . If you just want to flash your money by paying $25 for a bland, over cooked Lobster Club Sandwich followed up by paying $900 for a pair of jeans, then by all means, grab your cockapeekashitzapoo, stuff her in your puppy purse and go have lunch with your lady friends.
