Earth Hour 2008
posted by snekse

Will you be turning your lights off tomorrow?
On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

Earth Hour 2008: Saturday, March 29 from 8:00 - 9:00 pm

Omaha Restaurants: Opening and Closings
posted by snekse

With the constant change in the restaurant landscape here in Omaha, it's hard to keep track of what's new and what's gone. So we've decided to help.

Omaha Restaurant Openings

A list of recently opened Omaha restaurants. This will be a rolling list that will contain restaurants opened within the past year.

Omaha Restaurant Closings

A list of Omaha restaurants that are no longer open. This will probably end up being a permanent list that will grow indefinitely.

2008 James Beard Foundation America’s Classics Awards

Bagaduce Lunch
19 Bridge Road (Route 176), Brooksville, ME
  Owner: Judy Astbury
Bagaduce Lunch, a simple seafood shack overlooking Maine’s picturesque Bagaduce Falls, has been a summertime destination since it opened in the early 1960s. Local fishermen supply Judy Astbury, daughter of original owner Vangie Peasley, with just-caught seafood for her prized crab rolls, sweet scallops, and juicy fried clams. All that, plus sensational sides and Vangie’s homemade pies, make this a must for tourists and locals alike.

Irma’s Restaurant
  22 N. Chenevert Street, Houston
  Owner: Irma Galvan
If you want to get elected to public office in Houston, you’d better be seen at Irma’s, Irma Galvan’s downtown Houston breakfast and lunch spot that’s become a community gathering place. Among the knick-knacks, kitchy artwork, and memorabilia that plaster the walls, business honchos and blue collar workers sit side-by-side enjoying authentic, high-quality Tex-Mex dishes like breakfast soft tacos and beef and ancho chile gravy, served with Irma’s famous fruit-laced lemonade.

Maneki
  304 Sixth Avenue South, Seattle
  Owner: Jean Nakayama
With a rich history that stretches over a century—it has been around through both world wars, Japanese internment, and has even seen one of its former dishwashers become the Prime Minister of Japan—Maneki is the only surviving restaurant from Seattle’s once-bustling Japantown. Comfort food dishes like agedashi tofu and takoyaki share the menu with sushi and sashimi, satisfying homesick Japanese locals and introducing a new generation to traditional Japanese cooking.

Jumbo’s
  7501 NW 7th Avenue, Miami
  Owner: Cori Flam
Family owned for over 50 years, Jumbo’s was one of the first Miami restaurants to integrate in 1966 and was the first white-owned restaurant in the city to hire black front of the house workers. Known for its luscious fried shrimp, Jumbo’s also serves soul food favorites like oxtails and rice, chicken fried steak, and specialties named after local schools and sports teams. The neon sign that welcomes diners (24 hours a day) sums up the Jumbo’s experience with the words "a nice place for nice people."

Tufano’s Vernon Park Tap
  1073 Vernon Park Place, Chicago
  Owner: Joseph DiBuono
One of the few remnants of Chicago’s Little Italy, Tufano’s Vernon Park Tap has been owned and operated by the same family since it opened as a bar in the early 1930s. The small table in the bar’s kitchen has since expanded to include two dining rooms that are regularly packed with businessmen, police officers, families, and pre-game sports fans. The restaurant’s chalkboard menu offers diners Italian-American classics like lemon chicken, eggplant Parmesan, and fettuccini Alfredo at prices that make just about everyone a regular.

RECIPE: Homemade Kalua Coffee Liqueur
posted by snekse

I know there are lots of recipes out there, but this is the one we use. I can't say how it stacks up to the others, I can just tell you it's good. Very good. And it gets oh so much better with age. Like aged balsamic vinegar. Both go well over a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

The ingredients:

  • 3 1/2 Cups of sugar
  • 2/3 Cup of instant coffee (preferably Yuban)
  • 2 Cups of boiling water
  • 2 Cups of brandy
  • 1 vanilla bean - split
  • Cheese Cloth
  • 2 sterilized bottles - 1 liter each with resealable lids

Instructions:

Mix the sugar with the instant coffee in a large bowl.
Add the boiling water to the sugar and coffee mixture.
Stir until dissolved.
Add brandy to the mixture in the bowl, stir, then wait 5 minutes.
Use cheese cloth to strain the mixture into a second container. Preferably one with a pour spout.
Pour the strained liquid into the sterilized bottles.
Leave room at the top of the bottles to allow you to shake the liquid and reclaim the sediment.
Split your vanilla beans and add half of the bean to each bottle.
Let it age for at least 3 months.

That's it!

FOOD NEWS: March 13, 2008
posted by snekse

We hope to get back to doing more restaurant reviews shortly, but until then, we'll keep the news coming. In the not-quite-news department, we'll be moving to our new design in a couple of weeks, so get your monitors ready! And now for the news...

I didn't get a chance to watch Top Chef last night, so shhhhhh.....la la la...don't tell me what happened.

If you want to get a glimpse of what has already happened and what's going to happen, I have some teasers for you.
Off camera, Top Chef villain from season one, Stephen Asprinio, finally opened his restaurant, Forte , in trendy Palm Beach.

Anyone pre-order the Top Chef Cookbook ?

Speaking of Chicago, Schwa is now re-open with an awesome article from the Chicago Tribune that discusses their abrupt closing and their eventual rebirth. This makes me extremely happy since it was on my short list of places to hit the next time I'm in Chicago.

I love the internet.

And just this morning I found this little gem...

Cornell Wine Cellar Optimizer:
What Wine To Buy And When To Drink It.

Executive Summary: This report takes what we believe to be the first scientific approach to optimizing a personal wine cellar. We identify the key factors related to optimizing a personal cellar: performance metrics, such as drinking the best possible wine; constraints, such as budget and cellar capacity; and decisions, specifically what to buy and when to consume the purchased wines. We describe the Personal Wine Cellar Optimizer, which is a tool designed to identify the optimum cellar management plan. Using scenarios differing in cellar capacity, cellar life, and wine budget, we examine how the constraints affect the optimal cellar management plan. Using an example of a real cellar, we also illustrate how the recommendations can be used to improve the cellar management. This report is cosponsored by The Vance A. Christian Beverage Management Center, Cornell University School of Hotel Administration.
Registration (free) is required to get the document, but it's interesting enough that I think it's worth it - granted I was already registered.

And of course all that optimization assumes you can actually buy the wine you want without getting caught in red and yellow tape weaved the archaic distribution laws.
Help stop the madness.

In other booze news...

Empyrean Ales is expanding outside of Nebraska

Brent Udron covers Omaha's craft brew scene in this week's OCW.

All this beer talk makes me ask: Where's Omaha's curry pub?
Like Kennedy's Irish Pub & Curry House: San Francisco

In local restaurant news...

The Famous Dave’s Restaurants in Omaha got the smack down from the U.S. Department of Labor. The area restaurants were ordered to pay $92,516 in back wages for violations of the FLSA which states workers are to be paid overtime in the amount of 1 1/2 times their regular wages for time worked over 40 hours. Naughty, naughty Famous Dave's. I wonder what the corporate office had to say about the situation.

The last remaining Ted’s Montana Grill was rebranded Ted’s Nebraska Grill. Ted Turner even came to town for the reopening event . I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on why this franchise struggled so much in this market.

Harry & David is opening it's first Omaha location at Village Pointe Shopping Center. It only took them 145 stores to do so. For those not familiar with Harry & David, they sell gourmet fruit (and what exactly is that?), jams, candy, etc... Personally I've never understood what the big fuss was about.

The rumors have been confirmed . Blue Sushi will be opening a location in the Old Market. They will be taking over the Jobber's Canyon location. The owners plan on making a substantial investment in the renovation and hope to be open in June.

Too much good stuff in the Feb 29th OWH dining notes for me to rehash.

Lincoln Landmark To Close. PO Pears To Sell Off Memorabilia

The Omaha Restaurant Association gave out some awards . Restaurateur of the year: Katie O'Connor, owner of O'Connor's Irish Pub. Purveyor of the year: ConAgra Foods. Nicole Jessie, of La Casa Pizzaria, is now the association's president.

When Paul Urban said he was going to revamp the Lucky's 1001 menu, he wasn't kidding. Not only has he reprised his award winning Mac & Cheese recipe, but he's also added liver and onions to the menu. And by liver and onions, I mean seared foie gras, house brioche, glazed cipollini onions and a shallot-lemon micro green salad. Yum. Then April 14th to the 16th they're featuring "three days, 34 courses."
  • Monday: A 14 course over-the-top dinner with wine pairings. Think hyper-modern, molecular gastronomy type dishes.
  • Tuesday: A 14 course 110% local product dinner. The kitchen will be visiting local farms to not only hand select their product, but they will also be doing the butchering.
  • Wednesday: A 6 course kids tasting menu (no wine pairing :). Not sure what this will include, but probably something along the lines of fried PB&J or a Cherry Coke Amuse.
And last, but certainly least, the "Best" of Omaha "winners" were announced. What a joke. I'll comment more on this in the future.

IE Display Bugs
posted by snekse

I apologize to all of our Internet Explorer (IE) users on versions prior to 7.x. We made a design change to our site several months back that severely gimped some of our most popular content. When I made the changes, I only checked Firefox 2.x and IE 7.x . Considering IE 6.x users make up about 30% of our reading audience, that was a big "no no". I think I've fixed the majority of the major issues, and pages like our lists for Omaha Restaurants and Omaha Restaurant Reviews. Until now, IE 6 users thought we didn't know any restaurants in Omaha that started with a letter past 'D' (the bug was chopping off the rest of the list).

So have fun rediscovering our site. I would, however, recommend upgrading your browser if you have the ability to do so. It generally provides a better and more secure browsing experience. And if you haven't yet done so, I also recommend downloading Firefox, which is our browser of choice (along with 22% of our readers).

In some other display and design news, we're also in the process of updating our design a little. The new looks and feel will feature 3 columns instead of our current 2 column design. This will allow us to feature more tools and popular content along the sides as well as give us more flexibility in displaying multimedia in our main content section, such as including pictures directly in our posts instead of require readers to click through to Flickr.

ViewSonic 20"
Widescreen LCD Monitor
Now the bad news, this will require us to take up more horizontal screen space. For the majority of users this will not be an issue, but for the 6% of our users who browse our site at 800x600 and below, it may be time to invest in a new monitor. To see if you're one of those people, check out our preview of the redesign.
